2,000 miles from home

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Does Uniteddogs seem a little faster lately? You may had noticed the tiny outage yesterday on our sites. For couple of hours the sign in was closed. This was due to a large re-location we’ve been silently organizing for months. We moved our files 2,000 miles away from our home –from Estonia in Eastern Europe to United States on the other side of the pond.

This operation took a lot of time and it was far from easy, but was carried out excellently. A lot of research was done as well. There were over 140,000 photos copied from one server to another, and millions of pats (in fact, all of them), points and bits were transferred, too.

As a result of this operation, we’re glad to tell you that our sites might just be a lot faster these days. Why not see for yourself and tell us –come step in and pat some dogs or cats.

Uniteddogs.com and Unitedcats.com gather over 20,000 pets

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

A little earlier this week we passed 20,000 pets milestone. This means that now there are over 20,000 dogs and cats on our sites. This is really great news for us all – our team is really happy.Just before the holidays in December we rolled out virtual gifts section across our sites (Uniteddogs.com and Unitedcats.com). So people have been giving each other’s pets some nice little gifts for over a month by now. And few weeks ago we added several new gifts. There’ll be more new gifts coming up soon. But since the launch of virtual gifts, over 26,000 gifts have been given. That means over 750 gifts each day. This really means a big amount of positive feelings. In addition to these updates, we’ll have one more thing to share with you – we’re on track with some major improvements which you will hear about over the upcoming weeks.

A recent update — maps, widgets and more

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

We passed 10,000 pets milestone a bit more than a week ago already. And along with that, we did a bunch of updates to our sites. Let me give you a little insight of what they’re all about.

1. Dogs and cats on a world map — the Google Maps integration

First of all, from now on all dog and cat owners can mark the locations of their furry friends onto a huge world map. As a result, people can browse the map to find dogs and cats who live near them. Say you live in California and you’d like to meet up with some dog-owners to spend some time together. Just check out the map of cats and map of dogs, and you’ll see exactly which dogs are out there.

2. Wiki of all dog-related materials

We opened wikis within our sites that we hope one day will contain all dog and cat-related information. That is everything from breed descriptions, information about diseases, but also something as different as tips on how to teach your dog some new tricks. Every registered user can participate and help grow the wikis. If you happen to know a lot about some cat or dog breeds that you love, or if you’re a breeder, feel free to contribute some of your knowledge with other dog and cat lovers and owners.

3. Português? Português!

A new language was added to our site this week – Portuguese. Introducing Portuguese Uniteddogs, as well as Portuguese Unitedcats. They’re a good addition to Dutch Unitedogs and Dutch Unitedcats and Latvian Uniteddogs and Latvian Unitedcats and this means that you can use Uniteddogs and Unitedcats on seven different languages already.

There were some smaller tweaks as well, of course, which you can find information about on the sites’ forums. Enjoy!
